If you are a beginner looking to learn how to play the keyboard, you may be confused by the different messages out there and feel lost not knowing where to start. While different people use varying approaches when it comes to learn how to play the keyboard, here are 4 essential steps to get you started right away.

1. Buy a keyboard

The keyboards on the market today are not as expensive as it used to be. In fact, you can easily get a decent keyboard by investing a few hundred dollars. Should you be a bit more restricted by budgets, you can easily find a second hand set in proper working conditions on eBay.

2. Buy Metronome

I am a big advocated for the metronome, simply because it guides beginners on one of the most important aspect to playing the keyboard - tempo. Beginners who start to learn how to play the keyboard often face problems judging the tempo as they are unfamiliar and not experienced enough to understand the flow of the song. It is a good practice companion as well because you can use the metronome to start practicing at a slower, but consistent pace.

3. Buy a keyboard course online

If you want to play the keyboard well, you need to learn your basics of keyboard playing from credible sources. Buying and learning from the wrong courses and wrong teachers can result in great deal of time wasted to correct the mistakes in the future. If you are clueless about the products offered on the internet, always do a little research first. Take a look at what others have to say about a certain product before making a buying decision.

4. Listen to more keyboard pieces

Should you be interested to be able to play the keyboard by ear eventually, you must start familiarizing yourself with how chords and keys sound. Do not get intimidated by the prospect of dealing with notes and scores which you are not familiar with, the education on music theories will come if you buy the right keyboard course. Start by listening to some keyboard instrumental music, and develop a general awareness on the pitch of certain keys, and the tempo of the music.
